Loose and Creative Show
This is a good one I found scrolled away amongst all my GL recordings that I've never mixed or transferred. This tape was actually labeled wrong or I would have uploaded it years ago.
This was a very loose, and creative show. Plus it was Chris's birthday...as it could be any night of the week. If I remember correctly (which I do) the band & myself (including the crazy soundboard and light guys...)
got pretty damn LOOSE (wink) in the "Green Room" backstage at Cain's for about an hour and a half before the show started! All of a sudden someone said "5 mins guys" and off we went. Which is why the first thing you hear on the recording is the house music that never really fades out before we're starting Kanonen. Listen to how patient and loose the band sounds as they stretch out the Kanonen intro...especially Matt. He REALLY finds his groove early. Also, if your a REAL listener like I am, pay close attention to Chris's fills. Chris was filling space with some very creative stuff! Steve sort of struggles to find the exact spot where he wants to plant his feet for the evening during the Kanonen jam into Ish, but he recovers nicely with a little help from Wayne and Chris. Ishmael starts out like a house on fire and only intensifies as it goes on. A very brief version of Ish for the time, but when flow into Yellowstone of all things, who the hell is going to complain? This version of Yellowstone is a BEAST! All five guys were really in sync at this point. Each playing their own rolls, but especially playing and moving as one unit. Check out Steve's early solo, and again Chris's fills before the second verse into what I use to call the " Slick Porno" jam section. Steve and Wayne really light the jam up after that into Lick.
After Matt's solo during Mess details of the rest of the show get a little fuzzy. The band really started to go into hyper drive as far as the set list and jamming goes. I mean seriously...look at everything played after Mess. Early second set Smack By The Pound (which wasn't on the set list BTW) but the band (especially Wayne)was feel-in it, so they went with it. Smack included several teases including Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" and even a jam on Snow's "Informer" before surging into the Love reprise.
Check out Matt's bass intro for 12-Hour Pill. I didn't remember that at all until I listen to my recording again. Matt also gets pretty damn Slap Funky toward the end of 12-Hour. From there Matt decides to just DESTROY Shoestring single handily with his bass playing! He really powers the song more than normal...which is really saying something because Shoestring was ALWAYS one of the most powerful songs the band had. Next came a cover of the Porno For Pyros song "Pets". This may have been the first time they played this cover as a band. I cant remember, and neither can anyone else which is why I didn't note it as "first time played". All and all, this is a GREAT, GREAT show that any even halfway serious GL fan should download.
